If you are considering hiring our firm, there is a good chance that something important is at stake.
It may be your business, an investment, a relationship with a business partner, a transaction you have spent years working toward, or a dispute you never expected to find yourself in. Whatever brought you here, I understand that what looks like a “business matter” on paper rarely feels that way to the person living through it.
I have represented businesses and business owners since opening my law firm in 2014. One thing I have learned during that time is that the law is only one part of solving a client’s problem.
Of course, we need to know the law and know it well. But I also want to understand the economics of the situation, the personalities involved, where the leverage lies, whether timing helps or hurts us, what motivates the other side, who our audience is, and what you ultimately want to accomplish.
I believe good lawyers know the law. Great representation requires knowing what to do with it.
That means thinking several moves ahead.
My approach to practicing law developed in an unusual way. Since I opened my firm, clients were relying on me – only me. There was no senior partner. I had to figure it out fast.
What began as a necessity eventually became one of my greatest strengths as a lawyer: I learned not to accept the stale, slow playbook simply because it was the typical playbook.
Strategy also requires flexibility. Facts change. People behave unexpectedly. New information comes to light. A strategy that made sense three months ago may need to change today. We prepare carefully today, but we do not become prisoners of our own plan.
And my team comes to the table ready to go. I am naturally competitive. Years of playing sports instilled that in me long before I became a lawyer, and that competitive instinct is very much part of how I represent clients today.
But being competitive does not mean being needlessly combative. There are times when I will push very hard. There are other times when restraint, patience, or a reasonable proposal puts the client in a better position. Aggression is a tool. So is diplomacy. The job is knowing which one to use and when.
You should also expect candor from me. I am a straightshooter.
I am not going to tell you what you want to hear simply because it makes for an easier conversation. If I believe your position is strong, I will explain why. If I see a weakness, I will tell you that too. If I think spending another $1 pursuing something makes no economic sense, you should know that before you spend it.
My obligation is to your best interests, not to validating every position you take.
Finally, I want you to know that I do not lose sight of the person behind the issues.
A lawsuit may have the name of a corporation or LLC on the caption. A transaction may involve financial statements, contracts, and purchase prices. But somewhere behind those realities is a real person.
It is the business owner who built the company, the partner who believes someone they trusted betrayed them, the entrepreneur whose investment is at risk, or the executive wondering what happens next. It is the person who closes the laptop at the end of the day, goes home, and still has the problem running through their mind at night as they rest their head on a pillow.
I understand that when you bring that problem to me, you are trusting me to handle something that really matters to you.
I take that very seriously.
Our job is not simply to process your legal matter. It is to understand your problem, develop the best strategy we can, tell you the truth about what we see, and help you navigate it toward a meaningful outcome.
Sometimes you will need a lawyer.
Sometimes you will need a strategist.
Sometimes you will need someone willing to fight.
And sometimes you simply need a trusted advisor who understands the entire situation and can help you decide what to do next.
That is the role I want our firm to play for the businesses and business owners we represent.
